How we work together on your website copy

Your Discovery Call

We’ll have a  20 minute chat, usually on Zoom, for us to find out about each other and discuss what you want from your website copy.

If you decide to go ahead, we’ll discuss the timetable for your project. Then I’ll then send you a contract and invoice you for your 50% deposit.

We talk in depth about your business

Before I start writing I’ll have an in-depth conversation with you about who you are, the origins of your business, who your clients are, and how you work with them. This enables me to have a real understanding of your business and what language you use to talk about it.

This will take place on Zoom and is usually 1 hour. The call will be recorded so I can listen back to it and make sure I’m using your language when I write your website copy.

I’ll also send you a services questionnaire, asking  you to detail all the aspects of each service you offer.

We nail down your customers’ journey and their key questions

Then we will have another one hour consultation when I will talk to you about the services, your customers, and other aspects of your business. This call will also be recorded. If you have more services than we can talk about in one call, we will schedule further conversations.

Then this happens*

I send you the first draft of your website copy

You will get your draft copy as Word documents to go through.

We’ll talk through the draft on a call. It’s much easier than playing email tennis. You tell me about any changes you would like to make and I go away and do them.

I make any changes you need

Then you get your second draft and we have another chat. If it’s still not quite right, you can have another round of amendments.

* What happens when I write your draft copy

You leave me to it and enjoy doing what you love while I go over our conversations and do some thinking.

And then I think some more, often while drinking coffee.

I pull out the key threads about what you do and the problem your clients come to you to solve.

Website pages tend to follow a rhythm so I make sure I have the right information in the best places.

Then I'll probably delete some things I thought were excellent but didn't add to your offer. I'll ask if everything deserves to be on the page.

Once I've read it through several times (including double checking before I press 'send') I'll email it over to you.

What are your clients looking for?

Knowing what your clients are looking for when they start searching enables you to create a website which meets their needs. I’ll go into detail with you about why your customers will want to buy your service and combine that with keyword research to write in their language with your tone of voice.

Bonus: Content marketing suggestions

I come up with ideas for topics you could write about on your blog as I’m going along. I can’t help it. It’s just the way my brain works. When you have a website, it’s not a case of setting it up and off you go. You’ll need to attract visitors to it and content marketing is a great way to do that.

Why ask me to write your website copy?

I’m a former journalist and an experienced copywriter. I’ve worked on newspapers across the UK and use my news sense to develop your stories. I listen to you, get to know your business, and who your ideal customers are. Then I help you create stories your target audience will relate to.

As a journalist I had to get to grips with complex concepts quickly and explain them to a lay audience. You get the benefit of my knowledge, experience, and expertise.

I edited newspaper websites for several years. I know how to think through a site about what information people are looking for and how to link it together so it makes sense.

I’m also a business owner and know how hard it is when you are wearing all the hats. There are plenty of bits of running my own company that I have had to learn along the way and I know it can be hard to ask for help.

I am in your corner. You can use me as a sounding board to check new messaging and think about how it will play out to your audience. And I will be there cheering you on.

Frequently Asked Questions

When we have our discovery call, I will ask you about your timescale. I’ll always aim to hit your deadline and I’ll tell you when we first meet if I don’t think it’s possible. If you don’t have a fixed deadline, then we’ll set out a timetable for your project. How long it takes depends on how many pages you need me to write and how many conversations we need to have. For a website with a Homepage, About page, and three sales pages, you should expect it to take 6 to 8 weeks, with revisions. I like to get projects completed as soon as possible.

Yes I can. The process will be similar to writing a full website. We’ll have a discovery call and I’ll send you a questionnaire. Then we’ll have a conversation over Zoom for me to fill in the blanks.

No it isn’t. We’ll map out the site together and I’ll write the content. I’ll put notes in showing how the elements link together.

Yes. Introduce us and we’ll have a chat about your project and whether they need me to pay attention to anything in particular relating to your design.

I will do some keyword research if I’m not given any, and then work those keywords into your headings and website copy. I write for humans first because they are going to buy from you. SEO is complex. If you want to speak to an expert, I’d be happy to put you in touch with one and then follow their advice. You will need to engage them separately.

I offer staged payments, which will be set out in your contract or Schedule of Works. I ask for a 50% deposit when you book, then 25% when you get the first draft. The remaining 25% is due when you receive the final version of your copy.
