Are you looking for some top tips to boost your business? I headed over to Ireland recently for Kickstart Dublin, organised and hosted by my friends Amanda Webb and Louise Brogan, in association with Atomic.

 

I love going to events like this. There’s nothing like being in a room with other people building their own businesses and it’s as much about catching up with people and having a chat as it is about the speakers. This event took the form of several short presentations on a variety of topics including personal branding, business finance, and FOMO creation. There were some great interviews as well, including with Andrew and Pete.

 

Here are 63 tips I took away from the event. What’s going to help you?

  1. Define what you’re awesome at. Who needs to know? How are they looking for you?
  2. “You only need to know more than the person you’re helping.”
  3. “We conflate difficulty with importance. If something comes easy to you, it doesn’t mean you don’t know anything. You do!”
  4. “How to get over imposter syndrome in one easy step: get better! Learn more, do more.”
  5. Mind your digital footprint. Google yourself in incognito mode. What comes up? Is it what you want to be known for?
  6. “Don’t be afraid to turn the wrong people off.”
  7. “Root for yourself. Remember you are doing good things.”

  3. People take action when you invite them to! Ask them to click. Ask them to respond. Get people involved.

  1. There are year end accountants and management accountants. They don’t do the same thing!
  2. Always pay yourself

        7. Bring the time it takes you to keep track of your numbers down to 30 minutes a week so it’s not a huge chore

      • 9. It’s vital to have a cash forecast and plan. You need a system for this.

        10. Know what is coming in over the next 3 months, the next 6 months, and have an overall view. Then you can see the gaps coming down the road

9 tips to keep track of digital marketing ROI from Amanda Webb

  1. You need to measure time, money, leads and sales
  2. Use Toggl Track to measure time
    Add yourself as a client twice on Toggl. One version of you is admin and one version of you is marketing. This enables you to keep track of the time it takes you to run your business and do your content marketing.
  3. Put each task in as a project. Use tags.
  4. Keep track of your marketing costs.
  5. What do you spend on:
    • Scheduling tool
    • Tools for creating content like Canva
    • Email marketing
    • Outsourcing
  6. Work out the weekly cost of all of that
  7. Bill yourself for your time. Pay yourself at least minimum wage for creating all your marketing, ideally more. How much are you costing yourself?
  8. Keep track of your traffic and conversions
  9. Check if your customers are following you on social media. Are they on your mailing list? Do they mention your content? Ask where they heard about you from.

  1. “When you surround yourself with people further on than you, you elevate yourself.”
  2. “Success is about your tolerance level. How much you settle for what you’ve got.”
  3. “You’ve got to fail a lot.”
  4. “Everyone has a [email] list of no people, 250 people, or 3,000.”
  5. “People outsource the wrong things. Outsource what you know is giving you a good return.” (Not the things that you don’t like doing but think you ought to be.)

16 tips for creating FOMO from May King Tsang

  1. When you create FOMO you’re alerting people to the fact there is something happening that they want to get involved in. It could be an event, a conference, a membership, a programme, or a product.
  2. “Don’t care about the vanity metrics. Create content for the lurkers who don’t say anything but come to you when you’re ready.” In other words, the number of likes and comments you get is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to being seen and known.
  3. There are 5 steps to FOMO:
      4. Building community – you need a community to share the love

      5. Relationship building – you want to get to know people and show that you’re the same in real life as you are online.

      6. Authority and prospecting – be an expert in your field. This is where FOMO and sales begin.

      7. Notoriety – people need to know who you are.

      8. Direct communication – talk to people in the DMs, build those relationships further.

    9. You want to create FOMO at different stages:
      10. Pre-FOMO – get people interested in what’s happening before your event, challenge, or launch. Share tips and advice, behind the scenes, results, milestones, business and personal stories.

      11. Live-FOMO – be sharing material which catches people’s attention during your event.

      12. Post-FOMO – it isn’t over when people leave at the end of the day or your doors close. Keep the conversation going afterwards so people want to sign up for the next one or get involved with other things you are doing.

Ways to create FOMO:
    13. Share great content – previews, interviews, behind the scenes, tips, promote other people who are involved

    15. Talk about what you’re doing on social media

    16. Run a masterclass – give people an insight into how you can help them.

  1. That’s a great sum up of the event Rachel, thanks so much for including my tips. I should mention that you should pay yourself *at least* minimum wage, so many business owners and marketers don’t put any value on their time. If possible pay yourself way more than minimum.

    1. Thanks for a great event! I’ve amended the article to say ‘at least’. And yes, because we can, or we think we ought, we spend a lot of time doing things which we then undervalue because it’s our time, not someone else’s.
